Violence on Progress today, the capitol of the Planetary Consortium, where an as-yet unnamed bodyguard to a Consortium Official went berserk in the habitat, leading several assaults and one murder. The precise cause of the incident is as of yet unknown, but our sources within the PSS indicate that it was most likely caused by abuse of an illegal petal. Included in the string of casualties, store owner Samer Maloof, who is currently in critical but stable condition in part due to quick medical attention from members of the community, who ran to his aid after the attack. Samer is a long-standing citizen of Progress, who has had his shop since before the fall, and has strong ties to his community. According to residents, he was attacked after he confronted a man who had knocked over a patron of his store. This man was fleeing from the attack and murder of Planetary Consortium official Robert Holland, best known for finding My Favorite Jovian and bringing it to the PC. Unfortunately for Samer, the fugitive was heavily augmented and no longer in possession of his faculties.
The rampage, however, did not end there. As PSS officers tightened the cordon around the fugitive, two more innocent lives fell prey to the violence. Six year old Miguel and twelve year old Theresa Fuentes. Miguel had just received his mesh insert, and his sister was showing him how to play a popular children’s AR Overlay game when the fugitive ran through the neighborhood they were playing in. Miguel, unaware that the man was not part of the game, attempted to play with him, which drew the suspect’s attention on to him. Before he could focus his full fury on Miguel, however, his sister Theresa put herself in front of the fully grown and augmented man and drew his attention from her little brother, giving him time to go get help.
And this is where the story takes something of an unexpected turn. Captain Nathaniel Sterling of the Jovian Republic heard Miguel’s cries for help, and with the aid of his medical drone, saved the life of brave little Theresa Fuentes and stayed with her and Miguel until paramedics could take them to receive urgent care. When interviewed, Captain Sterling simply said that he did what any person would do in the situation and reacted accordingly. Miguel and Theresa are expected to make full recoveries, much to the relief of their parents, who have already thanked Captain Sterling for his part in saving the lives of their children.
When asked for a comment, the Jovian Embassy on Progress stated, “Captain Sterling’s personal actions today exemplify the ideals of the Jovian Republic, and only show that despite the distances that may try to separate us all as a people, empathy and understanding, the spirit of cooperation, show us that our civilization, our peoples, bind us all together no matter the circumstances.”
While several groups of uplifts and infomorphs are quick to point out the exclusion of Transhumanity or the existence of non-humaniod life, more moderate groups point out that this is one of the more progressive official statements made by the Jovian Republic.
The suspect was apprehended by PSS shortly after Captain Sterling saved Miguel and Theresa, and will have to be reconstituted for questioning. In the meantime, PSS is analyzing the body to try and determine what caused this violent outburst. Could a new drug problem be starting on Progress? We’ll have more for you as we find out.
